Everyone has heard from one source or another that metabolism is the key to gaining, maintaining or losing weight. Metabolism is based on a number of factors including gender, genes, behaviors and age. However you shouldn’t let these factors deter you from reaching your weight goals. Try these five tips to speed up your metabolism, which will help pounds melt off.
– Drink water
Water is required to perform almost every bodily function; digestion and burning calories require no different. Studies across the world have found that drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day speeds up metabolism. A study out of Germany even suggests that drinking 6 cups of cold water a day will raise a person’s resting metabolism enough to help them shed 5 pounds per year, without dieting.
-Mix up your workout
Aerobic exercises not only speed up your metabolism while working out, but also for a few hours post workout. The length depends on how hard you worked during the workout and how long the workout was; the longer and harder the workout, the more calories you’ll burn post workout. While aerobic exercise can have immediate results on your metabolism, the muscles in your body also cause more calories to be burned. Studies suggest that every pound of muscle burns 6 calories per day while fat burns only 2. While this may seem miniscule, these calories add up over time; so don’t forget to hit the weights, too.
-Workout in the morning
While working out any time of the day is okay, working out in the morning is ideal. We have discussed the fact that our bodies burn more calories after a workout depending on how intense and long the workout was. But studies have shown that our bodies will continue to burn more calories throughout the day when the day is started with a workout.
-Eat every 3-4 hours
When you eat only 3 meals a day, your metabolism slows down between every meal which can cause you to eat more at each meal and burn less calories between them. If you eat a snack every 3-4 hours, your metabolism will not take a break and will continue to burn larger amounts of calories. While this may mean eating 5-6 times per day, you should not be eating a full, American-sized, meal every 3-4 hours. Most of these should be snacks, where even a small handful of almonds will do the trick.
All foods are not created equal, especially when it comes to how metabolism reacts to them. Studies have shown that metabolism is directly increased when people drink coffee or green tea because of the caffeine it contains. They have also shown that a diet high in protein directly increases metabolism. Click here for more tips on how nutrition can help you lose weight.
While metabolism is often blamed for people gaining weight, it does not need to be an excuse. Changing a few key behaviors and diet staples can help you rev up your metabolism and lose the weight you’ve been wanting to lose.
